Understanding Immunotherapy

How immunotherapy is given?

Different immunotherapy may be administered in different ways. Common ways of administering treatment include:6

Intravenous – treatment administered directly into a vein, e.g. checkpoint immunotherapy is usually given by an intravenous infusion
Intravesical – treatment administered directly into the bladder
Oral – treatment comes in pills or capsules that is swallowed
Topical – treatment comes in a cream that is rubbed onto skin, which is often used for early stages of skin cancer

Depending on your cancer type and stage, type of immunotherapy you get, and how you respond to treatment and the side effects, your doctor will advise on how often and how long you should receive immunotherapy treatment.16
